Burls

Have you ever seen a big bump protruding from a tree trunk? Ever wondered what that might be?

The bump is called a burl. It’s a tree growth where the grains have grown in a deformed manner. The tree thinks it’s a tree branch and it keeps feeding it, which explains how burls can grow so big.

For burl bowls, the material is removed from the inside of the burl a variety of different ways, usually using a chainsaw and an angle grinder. The inside is then sanded smooth and finished with a plant based, food safe oil.

The finished product is a smooth, natural carved bowl that is truly one of a kind.
