'Lophelia' is the newest addition to The Cottonwood Collection. As cottonwood burl in itself is a natural phenomenon, each piece in this series focuses on the wonders of the natural world, highlighting the biodiversity of earth and the lesser explored flora, fungi and the truly remarkable ecosystems within it.
The bark inclusion of this cottonwood piece is so reminiscent of a coral reef, therefore an underwater name seemed only fitting. Lophelia is a cold water coral found throughout the North Atlantic ocean. It lives at a temperature range of 4-12 degrees C and at a depth where there is no sunlight. It also makes up a good portion of the largest cold water reef in the world, Rost Reef, off the coast of the Lofoten Islands in Norway.
