The name 'Pheonix' for this piece seemed too obvious, so I opted for Vesuvius, named after the Italian volcano and it's famous eruption two thousand years ago.

However, this piece will always be like the mystical bird to me, as it truly did rise from the ashes.

Created out of salvaged maple, this is the largest piece turned on my lathe to date. During the drying process, the spout cracked intensely. I took this opportunity to further pronounce the cracking and soften the edges using fire. During the burning process, I let the flames linger unabashedly and this created a beautiful organic channel down one side. Before and after, I power carved the outside to create a rugged, wabisabi look. I repeated the burning and carving cycle until I had my desired effect.

This was a nice piece of maple before getting started, but as with anything going through a rebirth, it's in the reawakened version where the magic exists.

At 30 lbs (14kg) and 28" tall, this is a statement floor vase. The spout opening has a large hole drilled for a thick statement stem or a bundle of smaller ones.

Finished on the bottom with a signature brass coin.

Dimensions: 28 inches tall x 9.5" wide

This vase is not watertight and is intended for dried florals. Measurements are approximate. Finished with an all-natural, non-toxic and plant-based oil.
